Chapter 8

T

he smell of food permeated the air. A large wooden table, polished to perfection, dominated the room, and plates laden with succulent dishes filled its length and breadth. Beside each plate, lay gleaming cutlery that sparkled in the candlelight, and crystal glasses gleamed nearby. Decorations of oranges, grapes, and strawberries were scattered around to add a pop of color. Tall silver candle holders lined the center, and melted wax flowed down their sides like waterfalls of solidified fire. Despite the size of the table, only two chairs sat beside each other, inviting a cozy atmosphere.

Thallan sat on one end of the table, tapping his fingers impatiently. He couldn’t understand why the woman took so long to get ready. It was just dinner. He couldn’t believe Ramona had talked him into this ridiculous affair. He’d been too easy on both of them, and they’d started to take advantage of it. He should never have let that human leave her rooms. Isa was not a guest in his house. She was a minor inconvenience until he figured out what to do with her. It would be better if both women understood that.

The sound of light feet approaching made him look up, and his breath caught when his gaze landed on her. Her peach gown complimented her porcelain skin perfectly, and her long brown hair had been styled up with a few tendrils falling gracefully around her face. She looked even lovelier than usual.

Isa walked in with her head held high. Thallan rose as she entered, cursing his inbred manners as he took long strides toward her. Isa held her breath. As he got closer, he extended a hand, and she instinctively took it. Thallan led her to the other chair and pulled it out for her to sit. Masking her surprise, Isa sat down, and Thallan walked back to his seat, ignoring the tight feeling in his gut.

He picked up his knife and fork and started eating. Isa scowled. So, he didn’t want to talk. Okay, that was fine with her. She tore off a chunk of bread and took a bowl of soup.

Silence fell between them as they ate. The only sound in the room was the clicking of utensils against plates. Isa tried to concentrate on her food but couldn’t help occasionally stealing glances at Thallan. He was so different from anyone she had ever met before. After what Ramona said, she couldn’t stop herself from noticing the strength in his broad shoulders and how his muscles rippled under his shirt. She quickly looked away, hoping he didn’t notice her blush. She had to distract herself.

“When can I leave?” she asked.

Thallan snickered and continued eating. “I have no intention of allowing you to return to your home,” he said between bites. “The only reason you’re here now instead of still locked in your rooms is because Ramona is a loyal servant for whom I care deeply. But I'm regretting my choice right now since it doesn't seem like you're going to allow me to have the quiet meal I usually have.
